DTLA’s Arts District
In the 1970s a group of artists saw opportunity in the forgotten buildings Downtown, east of Alameda. Vacant warehouses made for perfect live/work studios at prices the progressive art community could afford. Along with some of the very first creative spaces, residents opened up a number of avant-garde art galleries and artist hangouts that helped fuel the scene. Included in these was the legendary Al’s Bar on the ground floor of the American Hotel. Al's Bar opened it’s doors in the late ‘70s and was home to a groundbreaking punk-rock scene with performances by Nirvana, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Guns ‘n Roses until its closure in 2001.
Today, the Arts District remains the home of many artists as well as those in other creative industries, while still retaining some of its industrial uses & aesthetic. It is poised for another wave of development and change that comes with its own set of challenges. The area continues to attract new residential and commercial development, some of it now being built from the ground up and at a much larger scale than the existing structures. The apparel industry as a whole, thrives in and around DTLA’s Arts District due it’s proximity to so many multi-generational textile distributors, dye houses and production facilities. If a garment is being made in the US, there’s a high chance it’s coming out of DTLA which is something we’re very proud of.
The Rogue Collective
The Rogue Collective is an online + brick & mortar experience providing access to premium products and well made lifestyle goods. Our brick & mortar flagship is housed within the old Al's Bar location in DTLA's Arts District. Occupying the same space as such iconic artists is a daily source of inspiration and drive. The original Al’s Bar stage is exactly where it was 38 years ago, encased in new flooring to protect it for years to come. We pay homage to our predecessors with authentic band posters and host events for the art and music aficionados of our community furthering the Al’s Bar legend and rich culture of our neighborhood. Our store is built for and by this integral community and we are proud to serve in and alongside it. Originality, style and authenticity are the pillars from which we hope to build and usher in a new era to DTLA’s Arts District.
